One in Five Shoppers Buy Groceries From Dollar Stores

Dollar stores are converging with traditional grocers — one in five shoppers buy their groceries from dollar stores, and they’re also looking for more fresh and frozen foods (51%), national brands (47%) and beauty and personal care brands (35%). This grocery-adjacent push is helping dollar stores become the fastest-growing retailers in the industry, with food sales in particular up 89.7% between 2008 and 2020.

However, dollar stores still have work to do. In fact, 72% of shoppers cited lack of organization, lack of navigation and clutter in-store as elements that have made dollar store visits more difficult. Additionally, 38% of shoppers never use dollar stores’ apps, and 20% weren’t aware that these retailers even offered them.
